Description

A rare pictorial needlepoint with the portrait the Greek King Otto, first King of the Hellenes, installed on July 26, 1832, from the old Bavarian Royal line of the House of Wittelsbach. He married Amalia of Oldenburg. He was brought to Greece to serve as a mediator and an impartial referee during a very volatile moment in modern Greek history. He was deposed on October 23, 1862 having failed to effectively unify the competing factions of the local political parties and having been forced to adopt a modern Constitution.

This wonderful needlepoint piece was probably created for the Bavarian as well as for the Greek market on his accession to the throne and it dates to 1830-1832. A great piece of Philhellenic art.
